When curtains hide a window change: a simple observation routine

Record the window and room behind everyday curtains, prepare useful information and keep material handling separate from routine observation.

Look at a familiar place with context

Curtains can hide a window return or sill for long periods simply because the household is used to the room. If the window has previously caused concern, include it in a safe, ordinary observation routine. Note changed finishes, visible wetting or a new mark without touching suspected growth. The curtain position is useful context, while the building still needs evidence about any moisture source or material problem.

For a Chlorakas room, imagine an owner notices a mark only after changing curtains before a holiday. Record the wider opening and the earlier arrangement before assuming the textile caused it. Include known leaks or repair history and the room's occupancy. Our Chlorakas home guide encourages a wider view of the property rather than a conclusion drawn from coastal location or one newly exposed surface.

Keep textiles and construction distinct

If the curtain itself looks affected, ask how it should be handled before carrying it to another room or placing it with unaffected laundry. Textiles and wall finishes can need different decisions. A material assessment should explain what can be retained, what specialist advice is appropriate and what remains outside the agreed building scope. An image of the wall alone may leave those contents questions unspoken.

EPA home guidance recognises the different challenges of porous materials and specialist restoration. This does not mean every curtain must be replaced. It means the proposal should be appropriate to the material and condition rather than promise a universal treatment. Describe the textile, extent and history if known. Valuable or sentimental items deserve an explained restoration decision instead of an assumption based only on how the room appears from the doorway.

Prepare a focused enquiry

Send a whole-window image, the affected location and a short account of when the change appeared. Avoid scraping the finish or opening construction to produce a clearer close-up. Tell the assessor what remains hidden by fittings and whether access requires preparation. A home moisture assessment can distinguish visible evidence, possible source questions and further checks with their limitations stated.

Include whether the property is occupied, rented or usually closed, and identify the person who can provide keys. Practical access affects the visit, while the condition determines the scope. If the issue follows rainfall, record that relationship; if visible moisture appears at another time, record it too. Observations can coexist without forcing the owner to select one diagnosis before the property has been reviewed.

Return the room with a review point

After work, ask what the household should observe at the original window location and how any remaining cosmetic mark is explained. Keep the original pictures and the completed scope together. A curtain being replaced or a wall being repainted does not by itself tell you which source task was done. A review should connect the appearance with the work record and normal room use.

Our mould prevention service can help with practical follow-up alongside removal and associated water damage repairs. Mould.cy belongs to the same group as Waterproofed.cy where relevant waterproofing can be discussed. The ordinary curtain routine should remain simple and safe: notice, record and report a meaningful change. It should help the household communicate about a familiar place without becoming an unplanned investigation or another automatic cleaning cycle.

A little more clarity

Should affected curtains be treated with the same product as the wall?

Do not assume the same method fits both. Textile and construction materials need appropriate assessment, and the scope should explain their separate treatment or restoration decisions.

General property guidance. An individual building needs its own assessment, and personal health concerns should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
